!NOTES:I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Joel Barnes family. I am very interested in him though.

Joel Barnes was born ca 1802/03 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know who his parents were, but I suspect he is a son of Crissy Barnes, daughter of James Barnes and Nancy Ann. He is a proven nephew of Elias Barnes, brother of Crissy, who mentioned him as such in his Will.

I don't know who Joel Barnes' first wife was, but she was dead before 1850. In 1850 he had a Rebecca Barnes, age 21 with him, who was either his oldest daughter, or his 2nd wife. I don't know which.

Joel Barnes was listed on the 1814 Marion Dist, SC Tax list, which is unusual considering his age at the time (about 11 or 12), or else there was another Joel Barnes in the county then. The birth date I have for him may be wrong, as it is based only on one census (1850).

Joel was not found on the 1820 census.

Joel Barnes was named in the Estate of James Crawford in the accounts (meaning he owed money to the deceased) dated 26 Mar 1827 and again in the same file on 2 May 1829. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 158 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

In Sep 1829 (no date) Joel Barnes was listed among the purchasers at an estate sale of Ervin H. Flowers. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 267 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

Joel was not found on the 1830 census, though it seems that he had two children born before 1830 (though I could be mistaken about them).

On 5 Jun 1835 Elias Barnes named his "Nephew Joel Barnes" to be his Executor, and he named Joel's children as his sole legatee, though he didn't mention any of the children by name. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 465 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

Joel Barnes was listed on the 1840 census. He was the only Barnes listed in Marion County in 1840.

!CENSUS:1840 Marion District, SC pg 177 Joel Barnes 1010100000000-1100100000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Joel BARNES (1802/03) s/o Chrissy
1 Male(s) 10-14 (1825-1830) Benjamin BARNES (1826/27) son?
1 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Lewis BARNES (1835/36) son?
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Wife? (1810/20) gone by 1850
1 Female(s) 5-9 (1830-1835) Daughter? (1830/35) --> gone by 1850
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Sarah BARNES (1837/38) daughter

If Rebecca was Joel's 2nd wife (as I suspect), they were married ca 1840/48 in Marion Dist, SC.

Joel Barnes and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County.

Joel Barnes was named in the Estate records of Henry Culpeper in the accounts dated 25 Oct 1856. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 985 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

Joel Barnes and Benjamin Barnes were both listed in the accounts for the Estate of James Deracken dated 20 Feb 1858. Joel was listed next after Benjamin. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 1005 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

I didn't find Joel or any of his children in 1860 or later census records.

60382 !NOTE:Joseph GRANT born ca 1842/43 was listed with Thomas & Amy in the 1850 census, but he was way too young to be a son of theirs, so it seems likely he was a grandson. However, it is not obvious who his parents were. He isn't a son of Andrew GRANT & Sarah WHITAKER as that family seems complete (birth dates for most indicate a Family Bible record somewhere). He may be a son of Alexander GRANT and Susan LYTLE, but it would be a tight squeeze between two other children. That leaves James GRANT and Malinda GRANT. They had a son named Joseph, who was a different person. That only leaves the daughters as a possible mother to an illegitimate Joseph GRANT. Other possibilities exist though, such as him being a Nephew of Thomas & Amy instead; Grant, Unidentified (I22620)

Marty,
I have a death record (1915 Madison Co., NC) for Nancy Jane BROOKS (wife of James Franklin TEAGUE) that lists her father as a Robert PATTERSON. Nancy Jane was born 30 Oct 1836 in Buncombe NC. Her mother was Sarah BROOKS. I am unsure if the parents were married, or if the informant gave wrong information. I have looked at Bastardy Bonds for Buncombe and Madison Counties, but have not found any reference to this child. Have you found any relationships of BROOKS/PATTERSON families?

Phillip Head is documented to have fathered several out of wedlock children. He is a prime suspect to be William C. Grant's father. Furthermore, one descendant of Phillip Head and one of William C. !EQUITY: 9 Jul 1831 Marion County Equity rolls (Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley) in Roll # 45 a case is found naming numerous heirs (this is from Ms. Utley's extract, the notes given are hers):
John Smith and others vs. Archibald Cox, adm of Amos Turner. Filed 9 Jul 1831. John Smith and Franceis Smith his wife, Penny Turner, Thomas Turner, John Turner, Elizabeth Jane Turner, Benjamin W. Turner, Thomas Evant and Mary Evant his wife. Note: Mary had married first Benjamin Exum. Bill for account. Amos Turner died 1813 leaving considerable estate and heirs at law; Francis Turner, Penny Turner, Thomas Turner, John Turner, Elizabeth Jane Turner, Benjamin W. Turner, Mary Turner and Charlotte Turner, children of Amos Turner. Francis Turner has married John Smith; Mary Turner has married Thomas Evant (note: probably Avant). Separate answer of Archibald Cox shows that James Turner one of the children of intestate died intestate since since the death of Amos Turner and two of the complainants John Turner and Thomas Turner left the country about 10 years ago. 11 Oct 1823. Philip Bartel under oath 10 Feby 1832 states that he was present at sale of estate of Amos Turner and saw Benjamin Axum "who had married Mary Turner now Mary Avant one of the complainants soon after he had purchased a gun for $20.00... ."

!NAMED:19 Feb 1896 Franklin Press "Mrs. Manson GRIST died quite
suddenly Wednesday morning at the age of about 80 years. Mr. G.W.
GREENWOOD came to Franklin after a coffin for her". REFERENCE: Macon
County Echoes Vol 8 No 3 Fall 1996 page 16;

!NOTE:Years ago, Lawrence Wood (deceased) gave me Elizabeth's name, and said she was a Stroud, and that she married Manson Grist and that her father was "Isaac Stroud" who died, and who's wife then remarried to a Mr. Stewart. This was based on family tradition, and I was unable to confirm any of the facts.

Family Traditions almost always get some facts skewed over the years, and I did find a Julia Grist (c1830) who married William Stewart in 1849 in Rabun Co, GA, so perhaps that is where the Stewart connection comes in. There was an apparent widow Rosanna Stewart (1780/90) in Rabun in 1840, and Manson and Elizabeth named a daughter "Rosanna". Could this widow Stewart be a former widow Stroud? Was Isaac Stroud's wife named "Rosanna?" More research is needed in order to determine if Elizabeth Ann Stroud (1817) is indeed a daughter of Isaac Stroud, but for now I'll leave her here pending evidence to the contrary. I should also note that I've not seen any direct evidence that Elizabeth was a Stroud at all.
Elizabeth Ann Stroud married Manson Grist before ca 1836, presumably in GA, but no marriage record was found.

Manson Grist was born ca 1816/17 in South Carolina, county unknown. I don't know who his parents were for sure, but there was an older Benjamin Grist living near him who is most likely his father.
Stroud, Elizabeth Ann (I38245)
