There was another family of Crawfords, descendants of old John, but in a different branch of the family-Hal Crawford and a brother, named John, and two sisters, the wife of Cross Roads Henry Berry, and Mercy Bass, wife of Joseph Bass (senior). Berry's wife was named Charity. Hal Crawford married and went West; John Crawford never did marry. I suppose they are both dead. "; !REFERENCE: A History of Marion County, South Carolina From Its Earliest Times to the Present, 1901, by W. W. Sellers, Esq., of the Marion Bar. 1902. pp. 148-157 ... Cross Roads Henry Berry was a man of fine business sense, honest and upright in all his various dealings with his fellowman; he applied himself strictly to his own business (farming) and succeeded therein, not for show and ostentation at county and State fairs, but for profit. He settled on 150 acres of land, acquired through his wife, Charity Crawford (then unimproved), and with very little means otherwise began life at the Cross Roads, afterwards and yet called Berry's Cross Roads, where he lived and where he spent his whole life, and there and thereabouts made his large property. He entered into no schemes of speculation ; he at first acquired slowly but surely ; he took care of what he made and kept adding to it, making it larger and larger year by year ; lived well at home, but without ostentation; made most of what he used on his plantation ; he acquired a large landed estate around him, more than ten thousand acres, most of which he deeded to his children before his death; his land's were very valuable; he avoided debt through life ; he raised to be grown five sons and three daughters. The sons were Cade, Gewood, Elihu, James and Stephen, all of whom are now dead, except James, who lives on the old homestead of his father. ; | Crawford, Charity (I17726)

I am especially interested in these because they list a dead son named Manuel. My 2ggf was named Emanuel, also given as Manuel in his Civil War records. His uncle, born 1785 in VA, was named Immanuel. Neither of them is the dead Manuel of these records, but all instances of the name Emanuel/Immanuel/Manuel I know of are from McMinn Co, TN. So there is at least a chance that they are related to this family group. Can anyone here connect to this family group, and add anything to the family history they give? National Archives microfilm M1104 r. 3 Guion Miller Roll application #219, John Haney, dated 13 Sep 1906 Grouped with 219 are 238 (Alford Haney, brother of John), 12267, 16370-73 All were rejected for the usual reasons: not found on roll of 1835 or 1851, do not demonstrate descent from someone who was a party to the treaty of 1835, etc. Residence: Nantahala Township, Lookout Post Office, Macon Co, NC Born: 1847 Buncombe Co, NC Wife: Harriett, age 44 [b. 1862, d. abt 1 Oct 1907 per letter below] Father: James Haney, born Cherokee Co, NC, died 1884 Mother: Caroline Burnett, born Buncombe Co, NC, died 1886 Children of James and Caroline: Harriet, age 75, living [1831] Alford, age 73, living [1833] Frank, age 67, living [1839] Nancy, age 65, living [1841] David, age 61, living [1845] John, age 59, living [1847] ** Letter from John Haney, Lookout, NC, dated 24 Oct [1906] asking whether forms previously filed were in order. ** Letter dated 7 Nov 1906, from Miller Commission, acknowledging applications #219 and 238 for John and Alford Haney ** Supplemental application by John Haney for minor children, dated 24 May 1907 Residence: Duvall, Macon Co., NC Born 1848, Buncombe Co., NC Wife: Hattie Haney, deceased Children: Riley Haney, age 17, b. 26 Mar 1890 Crofford Haney, age 14, b. 14 Jul 1892 Charlie Read, age 12, 21 Apr 1895: "Charlie Read is a grandchild of mine his father and mother both being dead" ** Letter from John Haney dated 25 Oct 1907 asking about the progress of his application: "I am one a lone But To Little Childern and that is the Reson I wanted to know for my wife Drop Dead about 3 weeks agoe and I am Having a Hard Time." ** Letter from Miller Commission dated 22 Nov 1907 to John Haney asking whether he claims as a freedman or as Cherokee by blood. ** Letter from John Haney at Nantahala, NC, dated 27 Nov 1907 "Dear Sir, my Grate Grand Father was Bornd and Raised in Cherokee and He moved to Buncomb Co & Died & Baried Thire. John Haney" ** Typed form letter from John Haney, Nantahala, NC, dated 5 Dec 1907 to Guion Miller Commission: "I claim my Cherokee blood through my Grand-father his name was Samey Haney. I do not know whether any of my forefathers were ever enrolled or not. My father lived in Cherokee County, N.C. he lived in South Carolina about six months, and the rest of his life in Buncombe County, N.C. They never claimed anything but Cherokee blood so I know they were never enrolled in any other tribe." ** Typed deposition dated 10 Jul 1908 After being duly sworn, John Haney deposes: "My name is John Haney and I reside at Duvall, N.C. I was born in Buncombe Co, N.C. about 1847. I claim relationship to the Cherokee Indians through my father, James Haney, who was a quarter Cherokee Indian, and he claims through his father, Samuel Haney, who was a half blood Cherokee Indian. My father was born near Murphy in Cherokee County, N.C. My mother was a white woman. My grandfather, Samuel Haney, was born and raised in Cherokee Co., N.C. My father was born and raised in the Indian tribe in Cherokee Co., N.C. and we all claim Cherokee blood. I do not know whether my ancestors were enrolled. About 1851 my father lived in Buncombe Co., N.C. My grandfather died about 1850. I do not know whether any of my people, either on my fathers side or my grandfather's side, ever went west with the Indians. My father was always recognized as white with Cherokee Indian blood. My people, for as far back as I have ever heard, have always lived in Buncombe County and Cherokee County. Some of them might have gone west, but if they did I don't know. I do not know any of my uncles or aunts living at the present time. In this mountainous country families are easily separated, as the distance between us is too far to visit. We were always taught to spell our name Haney. I can remember distinctly of old people who are now dead telling me that my grandfather was a Cherokee Indian and was always recognized as such. Subscribed and sworn to before me at Franklin, N.C. the 10th day of July, 1908. Stanley A. Foutz Assistant to Special Commissioner of the Court of Claims" An unusual note appears below the text of the deposition: "The name Ha-nee appears on the rolls. Resembles an Indian. S.A.F." ** Typed deposition dated 10 Jul 1908 David Lundsford, age 74, deposes : "I knew the father of John Haney. . .his name was James Haney, and he was always recognized as part Cherokee Indian. I have often heard James Haney talk about his father, Samuel Haney, and he told me that he was born and raised among the Indians in the western part of the State of North Carolina. I remember when the Indians were taken out of this country. These people were always recognized as white with Indian blood. This is all I know about the matter." David [b. 1834] is possibly the father of Elizabeth, wife of David Haney [b. 1845, m. abt 1870]. If so, Elizabeth probably was born about 1855. ** Letter from John Haney, Duvall, NC, dated 28 Jun 1908 "A Word to the Clirk of the Cort Washington DC I will give application no. 219 & the Deth of Father & Mother. She testifies to the truth of the lineage given in the application, to the death dates of James Haney (1884, at age 80) and Caroline (1883, at age 75), of English descent. Also gives Sam NUKS as the Indian name of Samuel Haney. | 61685 | !NOTE:Shared by Gary Carson and Kay Patterson Sakowski: 11/12/1775 proved 6/16/1777 Samuel Patterson, Sadsbury Twp, exec wife Rebecca and Samuel Patterson.... "First I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Rebecca my horse and her saddle and bed and dourineter and a cow and eight pounds yearly of my estate for her support while she lives and remains a widow and likewise my son Matthew ten pounds lawful money of this provinance and my son Samuel fifteen pounds and my son William five pounds and my son John (John's) widow two pounds, and her daughter Sarah two pounds and her son Samuel two pounds, and my son in law Archibald Tweed and his wife Janet ten pounds."; !NOTE:Shared by Sara Samuel Patterson, in my line of descent, was probably the first to come to American. He was probably born in the early 1700s, in Antrim, Ireland. The Patterson family was Scotch-Irish, coming to Ireland from Scotland, most likely when Irish land was given by the English to Scottish settlers. The Patterson family was Presbyterian and it is notable that in almost every instance in their early years in the United States, the Patterson family helped establish a Presbyterian Church wherever they lived. It is also notable that they attached great importance to land ownership. It is most likely that the first Samuel did not come to the United States alone. There were probably other family members that I have not found. In old Samuel’s will, reference is made to his wife, Rebecca. I had one reference that Rebecca was not the first wife of old Samuel, but I have no proof of this. The first reference to old Samuel that I found is his will which was probated June 17, 1777,in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The will states that Samuel was a resident of Sadsbury Township and in the will he names his wife, Rebecca, sons, Mathew, Samuel, William. He also names his son John’s widow (not named but maybe Margaret Hope Patterson) and her daughter, Sarah, and her son, Samuel, and a son-in-law, Archibald Tweed and his wife Janet. Samuel made his wife, Rebecca, and his son, Samuel, the executors of his estate but later Rebecca, citing that she was too old and infirm to handle the details, make her son, Samuel, the executor of the estate. I could not find much about Samuel’s mother, Rebecca, or what happened to her. It is probable that she died after 1778. It seems that old Samuel owned at least 100 acres and perhaps another tract containing 192 acres of land. The son, Samuel sold the second tract, for 620 pounds Sterling and perhaps it was this money Samuel the son used to purchase land in North Carolina. | Patterson, Samuel (I90961)
