65151 !NOTES:Elizabeth Hensley, apparent mother of William H. Hensley (c1849) is a Hensley by birth as proven by the D/C of several of her children. In 1850 she was with Benjamin Hensley Sr and Jr in Washington Co., TN. I'd *assumed* she was the wife of the younger Benjamin. However, I have no proof they were husband and wife.

She married John Hugh Harris in 1852 and had several children with him.

Nick Hensley, a descendant, told me his grandfather stated William Murphy (son of William H.) was actually a Harris and not a Hensley. This explains it all. Elizabeth had William H. Hensley by a Harris, presumably John Hugh Harris, a few years before they got married, thus the Hensley surname (as required by law). Even though she did marry Mr. Harris in 1852, it was too late to change William's surname. Either that or it wasn't Hugh who was his father.

I found that others list her as the Elizabeth d/o William A. and Lucinda Hensley, but their Elizabeth was born ca 1834, this one in 1830 as proven by most of her census records.;

!NOTES:An Elizabeth Hensley married John Hugh Harris on 3 Oct 1852 in Washington Co., TN.

On the 1860 census, they had a William H. (Harris) age 11 living with them.  That certainly *could* be William H. Hensley, accidentally listed with his step-father's surname. This is a very common census error.

I'm not saying that's him for sure, but it certainly could be. If so, it would prove that Benjamin Hensley died between 1850 and 1852, and Elizabeth remarried in 1852.

I was unable to find John Hugh Harris in 1850 to see if he had a son named William H. from a previous marriage, nor did I find a William H. Harris in Washington Co., TN that year that age.

Elizabeth was just a few houses from William on the 1870 census, so that fits too;

My 4 g-grandfather, Jonathan Cribb, Sr [abt 1741-bef 1815] was born Georgtown, SC. He and family are found in 1790 in Georgetown, SC. He received land in 1797 in Brunswick, NC [later Columbus]. He is found in 1800 and 1810 in Columbus, NC. On 13 May 1815 his heirs signed their interest in the land to Abraham Reynolds. Jonathan, Sr's heirs: Jonathan, Jr [my-3-gg, he and family moved to GA] Thomas, Anthony, Elizabeth Williamson, Amelia Messer, and Selah Cribb. No minors or widow listed.
I have a copy of Andre's Cribb File and I have now visited your site. Neither of these sources recognize Jonathan, Sr as a part of the Cribb family. Note: Your Anthony Cribb 1785 m Courtney Reynolds [Runnels] in Columbus Co, NC and found in 1810 in same county and area. I believe this to be my Jonathan Sr's son as Anthony and siblings signed their interest in land to Abraham Reynolds. Point of interest: Abraham Reynolds bought NC land owned in part by Anthony Cribb [wife Courtney Reynolds]. Does not sound like your Anthony of John. I became lengthy; please forgive.
Thanks,
Judy Cribb Tripp Annis

Grice.—Just here may be noticed the Grice family, to which Mrs. Reaves belonged. Colonel W. H. Grice was originally from Horry County; he came to Marion away back in the twenties or thirties. In former times he had represented Horry in the House and had been Senator from Liberty (Marion) and Kingston before 1810 ; he was a well read man for his day; he had three children, one of whom was Mrs. Reaves, above spoken of. His youngest daughter, Ellen, became the third wife of the late Colonel W. W. Durant, well known in Marion, having been in the town perhaps all his life ; she was respected by all who knew her, and loved for her many good qualities she raised several daughters and one son to be thirteen or fourteen years of age (Thadeus, I believe), who accidentally shot himself twelve or fifteen years ago. These daughters of Colonel DuRant have all married and have families, except, perhaps, two, who reside in the old DuRant homestead, near the town, all doing well and quite respectable. Colonel William H. Grice had only one son, Augustus E. Grice, quite a literary man and a fine speaker ; he was elected Sheriff of the county in 1876 ; he lived about two years, and died during his term of softening of the brain ; he married, late in life, a Miss Tanner, and left a considerable family. Perseus L,. Grice, our present fellow-citizen, and quite respectable, is one of his sons —perhaps the oldest ; one of his daughters is the wife of J. T. Dozier, the late nominee of the Democratic party of Marion for County Supervisor.* Of the others of the family of Sheriff Grice, the writer knows nothing. Colonel William H. Grice died in 1854, leaving a good property in both town and country to his children ; he was up to the times in his day, a very honest and reliable man, very cautious and prudent. The old court house of 1823 had a large crack in its northwest corner, and such was the prudence of Colonel Grice—excited, perhaps, by his fear —that he would not go up into the court room when it was crowded, unless from strong business compulsion; whether it was dangerous or not, the writer cannot say ; he was in it many times when it was packed with people.;
Grice, Col William H (I78715)

65161 !NOTES:Eveline Baker was born ca 1815/16 (per 1850 census) in Ashe County, NC. She was apparently home with her parents in 1820, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20), and home in 1830, age 10-14 (born ca 1815/20), but gone by 1840.

She married William B. Smith by ca 1835 in Ashe County (no marriage record found). He was born ca 1809/10 (per 1850 census).

I have not looked for them in 1840 yet, but in 1850 they were in Ashe County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Eveline was named in her father's Will of 1855 as "Eveline Smith" and her husband William was named as Executor.

December 23, 1922 — August 1, 2024

On the 54th anniversary of his retirement and at the joyful age of 101, Dad retired again on Aug 1, 2024.

Earl Lincoln Evans was born the sixth child of William Albert Evans and Jennie Margaret Gilbert Evans on Dec. 23, 1922 in Blairsville, GA.

Dad lost his father as a young boy, and along with his sister Audrey, and dedicated himself to ensuring his mom was cared for.

At seventeen he spent a year in CA in a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp prior to enlisting in the Navy where he served in the South Pacific during WWII. He later joined the Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam. Dad retired from military service on Aug 1, 1970 after twenty-seven years.

Once retired, Dad became a "gentleman farmer" enjoying his cattle, horses, emus, and garden.

Dad was a proud member of Thomas A. Hamilton Masonic Lodge in Riceville, TN for 34 years. He was a true believer in service to country, family, and community.

Predeceased by his parents, brothers Cecil, Frank, and Denver and sisters Willie, Mable, and Audrey. Also, by his daughter Margaret Owens, infant granddaughter Kimberly Critelli, grandson Lincoln Evans and former wife Gladys.

Survived by his life's treasures, sons, Charles (Connie) and Richard (Ruth); daughters, Linda Critelli (Anthony) and Rebecca Wehr (Robert); twelve grandchildren, James Owens III (Stephanie), Christine Owens Hare (Laurence), Anthony Critelli (Sandi), Nicholas Critelli (Jessica), Amanda Critelli Westphal (Zachary), Cameron Evans (Kim), Samuel Evans (Lynette), Sara Wehr, Jessica Wehr (Aron), Emily Wehr, Ricca Evans O'Connor (Michael), and Dillon Evans (Amanda). Twenty-six great-grandchildren, Ashlynn, Sydney, Justin, Thomas, Anderson, Jack, Olivia, Punky, Titan, Austin, Dalton, Kamryn, Jane, Makaylee, Garrison, William, Andersen, Campbell, Oliver, Matilda, Ella, Evan, Emerson, Elise, Haisley, and Waylon; many nieces and nephews whom he loved; cherished life-long friends, Mrs. Blanche Candler and Mrs. Patsy Davenport.

We are grateful for the love given to Dad by the staff in building 5 of Stonehenge Senior Living, particularly Nichole, Megan, Kelly, and Alex. Also Pruitt Hospice Service for their gentle care.

Services will be held at Cochran McDaniel Funeral Home, 41 Hunt Martin Street, Blairsville GA on Friday, August 9, 2024 at 2:30 pm. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Burial with full military honors, provided by North GA Honor Guard, will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery, Gum Log Road, Blairsville, GA. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Dad's memory to the charity of your choice.

65179 !NOTES:Family tradition (as related to me by Lawrence Wood) states that Isaac Stroud was married to a woman who had a child Elizabeth Stroud (married Mason Grist). Isaac then died, and Mrs. Stroud married a Stewart afteward.

Evidence shows that the woman in question was Rosanna Johnston (c1788-1877). The only thing not certain was whether her Isaac Stroud is the same Isaac who is a proven son of Jesse Stroud. That seems the only possible choice in my opinion as the age and locations work.
