| 65321 | !NOTES:From my web page formerly at http://www.martygrant.com/gen/baker/baker-jackson-ashe.htm I don't know who Jackson's parents were for sure. Census analysis shows several possible suspects. Other researchers list him as a son of Thomas Baker (1765) which may be correct. Certain evidence points in that direction. The Baker DNA project shows some interesting results. One descendant of Adam Jackson Baker has participated in the project. His results show him to be a part of the Thomas Baker (1711-1777) group. This particular Thomas Baker is the grandfather of Thomas Baker (1765), so that does support the theory that Adam Jackson Baker is a son of Thomas Baker (1765). It does prove that he is part of the same Baker group at least, though it doesn't actually prove Thomas (1765) is his father. Jackson Baker would probably have been home with his parents for the 1820 census and listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). James Baker (1775/80) had four sons that age; James Baker (1794/1800) had three sons under 10; Jonathan Baker (1775/80) had two two possible matching sons; Thomas Baker (1765) had two possible matches; Zachariah Baker (1775/80) had three possible matches; Elijah Baker (1794/1800) had three matching males, and John Baker (1783) also had three matching sons. The 1820 census only helps a little since so many of the Ashe County Bakers had son approximately Jackson's age. However it does show that Thomas is a possible father for him. Jackson Baker would have been about 15 by the time of the 1830 census, so he should be listed in either the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20) or in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15). There are a few Bakers in Ashe County that year with sons in those age groups, so this does not help immensely in narrowing down the list of possible parents for him: my ancestor Jacob Baker (1760/65) had one possible match; James Baker (1775/80) had three sons that age; Morris Baker (1780/90) had three sons that age; Zachariah Baker (1775/80) also had three sons that age; James Baker (1794/1800) had two sons this age; Thomas Baker (1765) had one possible match. John Baker (1783) had 3 boys that age. Any of these could be Jackson's father. "Adam J. Baker" married Majah Baldwin on 6 Aug 1837 in Ashe County. Majah was born ca 1812/13 in Ashe Co, NC. I don't know who her parents were. I was unable to locate Jackson Baker on the 1840 census. He did not seem to be listed in Ashe County that year, or elsewhere in the area as far as I could find. He may be living with his in-laws or with other relatives, and therefore not a head of household. They were listed in Ashe County for the 1850 census. They were just ten houses away from Mary Cantrell Baker (c1768), widow of Thomas Baker (1765). This proximity may show that they are closely related. !CENSUS:1850 Ashe Co, NC pg 238 # 4/4 Jackson Baker, 35 Farmer, NC Marga 37 Riley 15 Mary 13 William H 10 Hiram 8 Martin 6 Noah 4 Joseph 1; !NOTES:By 1860 they had moved south to Cherokee County, North Carolina and were listed there on that census. | 65322 | !NOTES:From my web page formerly at: www.martygrant.com I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to James Baker, but he could easily be related to my ancestor Jacob Baker (1760/65) who also lived in Ashe County. James Baker was born ca 1800/10 (per 1830 census). I don't know where he was born, though probably in Ashe County, North Carolina. I don't know who James' parents were. Census analysis shows several possible suspects. James Baker would probably have been home with his parents for the 1810 census and listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10). Several of the Baker families listed in Ashe County that year had an apparent son that age. One of these could be James' father. Unfortunately the census taker that year only used initials, so it is difficult to know who was who. J. Baker, probably James Baker (1775/80) had three sons that age; Z. Baker, likely Zachariah Baker (1775/80) had one son that age; another J. Baker (still unidentified) had five sons that age; another J. Baker, probably John W. Baker (1783) had two sons that age; S. Baker, likely Samuel Baker (1755/65) had four sons that age; M. Baker, likely Morris Baker (bef 1755) had one son that age; and finally, another S. Baker, likely Solomon Baker (1770) had two sons that age. As you can see the 1810 census does not narrow down the list of possible parents for this James Baker, for every Baker household in the county that year had at least one son of approximately the same age. In 1820 James Baker would probably still be home with his parents. He should have been enumerated in either the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804) or in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1804/10), depending on what his actual birth date was. Jacob Baker (1760/65), my ancestor, had one apparent son in each of those age groups; James Baker (1775/80) had two sons of matching ages; Jonathan Baker (1775/80) had three possible matching sons; Thomas Baker (1760/65) had one matching son; Zachariah Baker (1775/80) had one matching son; Elijah Baker (1794/1800) had one matching male, and John Baker (1783) had one matching son. Like the 1810 census, the 1820 census does not help narrow down the suspects too much. James Baker married someone in the 1820's. There is a marriage record dated 20 Oct 1828 between a James Baker and a Catherine Baker (a cousin?) in Ashe County. This may be the same James Baker under discussion here. James Baker was listed in Ashe Co, NC for the 1830 census. He was listed as "Jr" and was next door to Zachariah Baker (1775/80) and just a couple of houses from James Baker "Sr" (1775/80) and from Morris Baker (1780/90). 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Ashe Co, NC pg 5 James Baker Jr 0000100000000-1101000000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) James BAKER (1800/10) s/o ? 1 Female(s) 15-19 (1810-1815) Wife? (1810/15) 1 Female(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) Daughter? (1820/25) 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) Daughter? (1825/30) I was unable to find James Baker on the 1840 census. He may have died in the 1830's or moved away, though the elder James Baker (1775/80) was still there. Children James Baker had two daughters per the 1830 census records. I have not identified them yet. I would assume that they migrated away in the 1830's with their parents. | Baker, James (I99336)

An extract from pp 480-481: "Lewis.-This family were from Ireland, and settled in Virginia. A son of this family, named William, came to South Carolina before the Revolution; he married Miss Mourning Vampelt, a Hollander. Tradition informs us that her father and she came from Holland together, leaving his family in Holland; they came, as it seems, prospecting, and got down into South Carolina, where they met up with William Lewis, and soon an attachment (mutual) sprang up between the two young people, and they got married; whereupon old man Vampelt went back to Holland for his family, and was never afterwards heard of. William Lewis settled in Horry County ; they had and raised seven sons and two daughters ; the sons were William, James, Isaac, Hardy, Joel, Jonathan and Patrick; the girls were Polly and Zilpha. Of these, Polly married Averitt Nichols, of Columbus County, N. C, and was the mother of the late venerable Averitt Nichols, of Nichols, S. C. The other daughter, Zilpha, married William Gerald, of Horry. Of the sons, Hardy, Joel and Jonathan settled in Marion County Hardy on Little Pee Dee, below Gilchrist's Bridge, Joel and Jonathan higher up the river, on the south side, near where Miller's Church now stands ; and James at Allen's Bridge." !NOTES:"A History of Marion County, South Carolina", W. Susannah Porter, of Columbus County, N. C. ; by her he had two children, one son, Evan, and one daughter, Pennsy or Pennsylvania; his second wife was Feraiba Strickland, and by her he had two sons, William S. and Joel. Of the children by the first marriage, Evan Eewis married Miss Margaret Cribb, and by the marriage had two sons, Jonathan and Dempsy, and two daughters, Carrie and Adaline, called Addie. Of the daughters, Carrie Eewis married Dr. F. M. Monroe, of the Latta section; by this marriage several children were born. Addie, the younger daughter, married Oliver Williams, of North Carolina; they have two sons. Of the sons of Evan Lewis, the eldest, Jonathan, has never married-a young man about fifty years of age, of good habits and morals, a well-to- do, good citizen and reliable every way. Why he has not married and made some good woman happy, is a mystery, which, perhaps, will never be solved! Dempsy Lewis, the younger brother, married in early life. Miss Eliza Jane Stackhouse, daughter of the late Mastin C. Stackhouse ; they have ten chil- dren, eight sons and two daughters ; the sons are Taylor, Leon, Marvin, Victor-these are grown ; four others, Odell, Rupert, Evan and Ernest - these are not grown; the two daughters, Maggie and Addie, near grown-not one of the ten children married ; he is a good man and substantial citizen. William S. Lewis, by old Jonathan's second marriage, married Miss Rhoda Mace (both now dead) ; they had five children, Sarah, W. Evan, Anne, Joel J. and J. Wesley. Sarah married Robert Edwards ; had two sons, Sandy and George ; the father is dead. The two sons went to Arkansas ; Sandy is dead ; George is in Texarkana, and is Sheriff of that county or the one in which that city is located, and is well to do. W. Evan is on the old homestead, married a Miss Avant, and has some family (young) ; is a good citizen. Anne married, first, Marion Avant; by whom she had one son, Willie, who grew up to manhood and died-a very promising young man ; his mother, the widow, married again John A. Wilson, of Wilmington, N. C, and is, as it is said, doing well. Joel and Wesley went West; Joel is said to be doing well in New Orleans. Pennsy, the only daughter of old Jonathan Lewis, and full sister of Evan Lewis, married, first, Angus Carmichael, and by him she had one child, a daughter, who grew up and married John W. Norton, as hereinbefore stated in or among the Norton family ; Pennsy, the widow, then married John Norton, the father of Hon. James Norton, and who has already been noticed among the Norton family. Evan Lewis was a capital man and good citizen- a useful man in his day ; was a good surveyor -plats, made by him, are now to be seen often, and bear the scrutiny of the Courts. He was opposed to the Confederate War, but had the good sense to keep his mouth shut, and to "stand to one side and let the procession pass by." !CENSUS:1810 Marion Dist., SC p 87A Jonathan Lewis age 26-44 (1765/84) 10010-00010-0-1 My analysis (who each person *might* be): 1m 26-44 (1765/1784) Jonathan Lewis (1765/70) 1m 0-9 (1800/1810).. | 65328 | !NOTES:fromTom Howard: And, part of the following entry is incorrect. + 32 i Andrew3 HENSLEY [37819], born 1809/10 in Buncombe Co, NC. He married Happy GILBERT [37820). He actually married Happy Howard Hensley (b. abt 1821, Harlan Co., KY). Although I have found no marriage record of Happy's marriage to John Helton (I wonder if this is the same man who was later killed by Samuel Howard?), other records confirm it. Happy, a.k.a. Pink or Pinky, was the daughter of Andrew (abt. 1781-1823/34) and Rebecca (Osborne) Howard (1790-bet. 1860 and 1870). Happy had an adulterous affair with Andrew Hensley during her marriage to Helton. She married Hensley shortly after her divorce from Helton, and went on to live "happily" ever after. Andrew Howard, above, was a son of Samuel and Chloe Howard. Rebecca was probably a daughter of Ephriam Osborne (1752-1852). If Andrew Hensley was a son of Lewis and Nancy Howard Hensley, then Andrew and Happy were first cousins. See notes below. The full book is on FamilySearch.org; JOHN COX (23), son of James (5), was born in 1700, and died, 5-14-1778. His wife's given-name was Mary. She died 2-15-1798. The following children have been assigned to them (but there is some confusion here): Joshua (64), born 4-24-1747, died 11-26-1759; General James (87), born 10-17-1748, died 4-19-1805, grandfather of Samuel S, (sunset) Cox; and William (66), born 5-12-1749, died 2-15-1828, who married Elizabeth ____ born 7-8-1756, died 7-5-1811. The closeness of the birth-dates assigned to James and William here will be noticed. Another record gives General James Cox as being the son of Joseph (43), son of John (17), in which place he will be again considered. !REFERENCE:“This Old Monmouth of Ours” by William Hornor, 1932, pp. 93-96. The full book is on FamilySearch.org; JOSEPH COX (43), son of John (17), was born in 1713, and died 4-17-1801. His wife is supposed to have been named Mary, born in 1714, and died 11-24-1800, He is said by one authority, who mentions the names of no other children, to have been the father of General James Cox (87), who is made, by another record, to have been the son of John Cox (23). The writer has no present means of determining the merits of these conflicting claims, although the dates, as given, would seem to favor Joseph (43) as his father. !REFERENCE:“This Old Monmouth of Ours” by William Hornor, 1932, pp. 93-96. The full book is on FamilySearch.org; GENERAL JAMES COX, son of Joseph (43), or John (23), was born 10-16-1743, and died 9-12-1810. Ho married Ann whose last name has not been ascertained. He served in the Revolution. At a later period he removed to Kentucky, from which State he was a Representative in Congress. His children are said to have been: James (94), born 1-26-1782; William (95), born in 1776 and died 7-28-1803; Lewis (96), born in 1769 and died 6-24-1774: Aaron (97), born 5-4-1771 and died 4-4-18-4 (sic). There were three other children, but their names do not appear. One of the above sons was the father of Samuel S. (Sunset) Cox, so long famous in Congress, and throughout the country. There is a statue of him in Astor Place, New York City. He was present at the laying of the corner-stone of the Monmouth Battle-Monument at. Freehold, where he was seen by this writer (then a small boy), whose mother was, a few years later, a fellow-passenger with Representative Cox on a European trip. The impression he made was very- favorable. He was the author of several books. | Cox, Gen James (I114934)

However, they were next door neighbors in 1830, and I do have DNA matches with several of Henry & Darcus's descendants, so there is a connection, and her (Huffman) being the same person as widow Darcus Watson would explain it perfectly. * If anyone has a marriage record for Henry Foster & Dorcas, please let me know.
