!NOTES:Revolutionary War Pension R8093 John Penland;

!NOTES:See Revolutionary War Pension of Isaac Grant. John Penland made affidavit in 1852 on Isaac Grant's behalf and also stated William Moore was his father-in-law:
On December 3rd, 1852 in Burke County North Carolina, John Penland,1 aged about 88, gave testimony that he lived a near neighbor to Isaac Grant in Burke County North Carolina during the time of the revolutionary war and always understood that said Grant was a soldier in said war even though the affiant did not serve with him. The affiant states that Isaac Grant was bound as an apprentice to the affiants father-in-law William Moore in Burke County North Carolina ;

Scott. - The Scott family, in Hillsboro, are not very extensive. Old man Pharaoh Scott lived near Tabernacle Church, on the road from Gaddy's to Nichols; he was a harmless, honest and inoffensive man; he raised three sons, Thomas, James and Ely. Thomas married and moved West, many years ago; James married Miss Sallie Elvington, daughter of old John Elvington ; James Scott is dead, but his wife, Sallie, still survives ; he raised a large family, sons and daughters, all unknown except the oldest son, Giles Scott, who is now a worthy citizen of that community. Ely Scott also married Miss Appie Elvington, daughter of old man John Elvington ; by her he had one daughter ; his wife died, and he married another one of the ten daughters of John Goodyear-an excellent woman she was ; I think she is dead ; she left two daughters ; Ely Scott is also dead. Old Pharaoh Scott had one daughter, named Patience; she married Jerry Campbell, near Mullins; Jerry and wife are both dead; they left two sons, K. M. Campbell and Rev. Ely Campbell, citizens of Reaves Township, and much respected. Pharaoh Scott had a brother up about the High Hill, whose name is forgotten; he had sons, William and Ervin, and perhaps others, and there are members of that family now in that neighborhood, two of whom, John L. and William, are known. Ervin Scott married a daughter of old Jessee Elvington; he was an energetic, persevering man; he died in middle life, and left a family. I know nothing of them-nor is anything known of William Scott's family. ;

"Jerre CAMPBELL married Miss Patience SCOTT, daughter of old Pharoah SCOTT, in the Tabernacle section, in Hillsboro; they had two sons and four daughters; the sons are Kenneth and Eli. One daughter married Willis ROGERS, and had Simeon, Hampton and others. Eli CAMPBELL married Miss Josephine HUGGINS, and had one child, a daughter who married Percy HARRELSON, and has one or two children (small). One daughter of Jerre married Lawrence SESSIONS; she had three or four children, and died. Two of Jerre's daughters are unmarried. Kenneth CAMPBELL married a Miss HARRELSON, and has two daughters, unmarried.";

!NOTES:Matthew Stewart made his Will on 26 Jan 1808, and may have died that same day or soon after. That is the death date used on his tombstone, placed more than a hundred years after his death. His marker is at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mint Hill, Mecklenburg Co., NC, which is very close to where he lived.

In his Will he named his wife Elizabeth. After her death land was to be divided between William McCall and Samuel Black, his son-in-laws. He also named sons Henry, William, James and Reuben Stewart, and daughter Sarah Coburn, and son John. He named his son-in-law Samuel Black as sole executor. He signed the Will with a mark. Witnesses were David Moor and Reuben Stewart and Azariah Coburn. The Will was proven in court April 1808, meaning he had died by then. I would suggest that is probably closer to when he died than the actual date of the Will, but I could be wrong.
